Guys, I have to tell you about this Swedish show called Real Humans (Äkta människor) that I’ve been watching this weekend. It’s like my, as a self-proclaimed feminist media critic, wet dream.
Äkta Människor is about a modern society where humanoid robots are a part of everyday life and some of them are starting to rebel against their masters. This is the synopsis from IMDB:
In a parallel present the artificial human has come into its own. Robots no longer have anything robot-like about them. New technology and advancements in the field of science have made it possible to manufacture a product - a kind of mechanized servant - that is so similar to a real human that it can often be considered a perfectly good substitute. The Human Robot (HUBOT) have also given rise to new problems and dilemmas. Thorny legal questions have increasingly started to occupy people’s minds and are still waiting to be answered: Who is responsible for the actions of a hubot? Do hubots have some form of “hubot rights”? Should they be paid for their work? As an ever growing number of people form relationships with hubots, the boundaries between human and machine become blurred. When humans make copies of themselves, which are so close to the real thing they form emotional bonds, the questions arises - What does it really mean to be ‘human’
It adresses everything: rape culture, domestic violence, male chauvinism in the workplace, sex trafficking, homophobia, discrimination of minorities, discrimination of the elderly, even terrorism.
It uses the hubots as a way of highlighting everything problematic - and good - in the human society today. Some of it may be triggering, so tread with caution (PM me and I’ll give more info).
And not only that: the casting is diverse. There are female leads, there are POC in strong roles (although still perhaps not as many as I would have liked), there are character’s of every age.
In fact, about the female characters: There are at least as many main characters that are women as there are that are men and they are often in positions of power. There is one character that is meant to be a dangerous killing machine and, this to me is important, that does not automatically mean she has to dress like a sex kitten. Sexy does not equal dangerous. And one of the other main leads is a middle aged lawyer and a married mother of three <— how often do we get to see people like this in popular media?
Another character is a female priest who’s also married - to a woman. Because you can do that in Sweden.
Also the actors are just gorgeous.
It’s in Swedish, but you can find it subtitled in English.
For real though this show is everything I want so far. I want more of tumblr to get into this so I have more people to talk to about it. Watch it!
